According to Google, sports, Varoufakis and 50 Shades of Gray were the most popular topics for Greeks in 2015

What did Greeks search for in Google in 2015? The annual report of the world search engine, "Year in Google", answers this question. Some of the results are totally expected and others quite surprising. The most interesting fact is that sports rank first in Google searches of Greeks and not politics. There were many in the "how to" category, in which users look for guidance from the search engine on how to do something.

The report also presents data on the most popular travel destinations in Greece and abroad, as well as searches for film shows, theatre performances and concerts.

The fastest rising searches ranking, which includes all categories, is headed by the European Basketball Championship, followed by the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 and the two election races to appoint the members of parliament that rank only third. Fourth rank the searches for the film 50 Shades of Gray during the year, followed by the searches for the referendum, which the government convened in July, former Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis, the latest model of iPhone 6S, SYRIZA, the ENFIA real property tax and for the excavations in Amphipolis.

The ranking in the category Breaking News is as follows: elections 2015, the referendum, the attack on the office of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, Islamic State (ISIS), the terrorist attacks in Paris, Grexit, the earthquake in Nepal, the capital controls, government reshuffle and the agreement.

The searches for Greek tourist destinations and resorts show the most popular holiday places last summer, namely  Aegina island, the region of Messinia in the Peloponnese, the Cycladic Islands, Kefalonia, southern Crete, Alonissos island, Halkidiki, Parga, the Peloponnese, Lefkada island.

Paris, Dubai, London, Istanbul, Prague, Cuba, Switzerland, Moscow, China and Tibet were the top ten "winning" searches for trips abroad.

50 Shades of Gray is at the top of the ranking of the most popular Google searches for films in 2015 followed by Birdman, Spectrum, Mad Max, American Sniper, The Imitation Game, Interstellar, The Theory of Everything, Crimson Peak and Into the Woods.

"How to glue" is the leading question in the "How to" ranking, followed by "how to lose belly fat", "how to clean the oven", "how to solve the Rubik's Cube," "how to find a job", "how to find my ascendant "," how to make pancakes", "how to survive the breakup with my former girl/boy friend", "how to deal with stress" and "how to quit smoking."

The highest number of searches in the category "demand for tickets" was for the play The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh, the matches of PAOK football team, Robbie Williams’ concert, the play My Beloved Smyrna, the musical Mamma mia!, the play Grand Chimera, the musical Kiss me, Kate, the musical fashion show Madwalk 2015, the play Man of All Time by Robert Bolt and 50 Shades of Gray.

In the world ranking, the first place among the most popular searches (with keywords) goes to basketball player Lamar Odom, whose health problem drew the public interest. Next in the ranking is the attack on Charlie Hebdo, the video game Agar.io, the new film from the series Jurassic World and Paris.

The football championship Copa America was among the most popular searches in the field of sports, followed by ​​the Wimbledon Championship, the cycling race Tour de France and the Rugby World Cup.

The highest number of searches for films was recorded for Jurassic World, Furious 7, American Sniper, 50 Shades of Gray and Minions.

In addition to Lamar Odom, the highest number of searches for persons includes martial arts fighter Ronda Rousey, Caitlyn Jenner for his gender change, singer Adele and actor Charlie Sheen, who has announced that he has AIDS.

The attack on the office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, Paris, the hurricane Patricia, Islamic State and the earthquake in Nepal were the international news with the highest number of searches.

In the field of technology, iPhone 6S, Samsung Galaxy S6, Apple Watch, iPad Pro and LG G4 recorded the highest number of searches.
