But free food offered by the state in times of crisis, saved entire generations.
«I survived thanks to the free food during the great famine», acknowledges the honorary president of New Democracy Constantinos Mitsotakis. «Distribution of free food is something very important. Children should not be starving or malnourished. Now they have started again to provide free food. Also in the army. I also recommend that in social institutions the state should do the same. Everyone should take some action», says Mr. Mitsotakis.
«In the primary school, at Carrie Lefkada an organization of the United Nations was sending us food. Milk powder and a yellow cheese that we ate for the first time and it was sticking on our teeth, a Dutch one» remembers the former Chairman of the Parliament Apostolos Kaklamanis. «We preferred the white cheese. They also gave us bread with raisins. I remember that in 1964 when George Papandreou was the Prime Minister and Loukis Akritas was Deputy Secretary of Education, the morning hot drink for children and the lunch were introduced in Greece for the first time. They were taking us to some camps and tried to strengthen our health through the fresh air», he recalls.
