The backgammon master – the tournament and the winners

Thirty pieces in two different colours and a backgammon board, one of the oldest games, yet so popular these days too. Why does backgammon attract players so much? The rules are not difficult, but the strategy is very important. Add the luck on the top of the dice and you might begin to understand the magic of backgammon. It is this magic that we have tried to use in our tournament in order to connect players from Bulgaria and Greece. Of course, backgammon would not be what it is, if there was no prize - iPod Shuffle, the tiny stylish music player from Apple.

We started with one condition - to play between the hours of 12 noon on 14 November and 12 noon on 16 December and the first two people in the ranking will win an iPod Shuffle. But to make the game more fun and to give all players more chances, we decided to make a lottery with another two music players. So, a total of four players were waiting for their new owners! Before announcing the winners, I would like to warm things up with a few interesting facts. We were surprised by users’ ingenuity in their attempts to circumvent certain rules and in the use of other rules in their favour. There was everything - fixed games; game of nerves: taking advantage of the rule giving a walkover after five minutes of inactivity, some players deliberately delayed the game to force their opponent to leave the game and thus take more points. The desire to rank first made some of the most frequent users to attempt, at the end of the tournament, to try to gain extra points using means that were not allowed. There was a game played from two computers too. In general, a full range of techniques, practices and strategies were used to take the players to the first two positions. We will use the experience and observations we have gained we will use in the next tournament with prizes that is planned for next year. We tried to remove all apparent violations and not take them into account in determining the winners. However, we took into account the time and effort of the players.

We tried our best to be objective. So, the two players who rank first in the backgammon tournament of GRReporter are Vali01 and romi1931. Participants who win an iPod Shuffle from the lottery are: lidia111 and ali baba. We will contact them via the e-mail stated in their accounts to clarify when and how they will receive their prizes.

To all others: We thank you very much for your participation! Improve your skills in backgammon and look forward to our next tournament!
