The best Greek beers

Try some of the most famous Greek beers, and even the most discerning of you will see that they are as good as imported brands.

Alpha: a historical brand

This lager is cool and thirst quenching with rich foam and a typical Greek flavour. It has a distinctive aroma and is one of the oldest beer brands in Greece, with 48 years of history. It is also the first beer with a Greek name. Alpha, with its brilliant golden colour and mild malt and yeast flavour is produced by the Athenian brewery according to a traditional recipe with 42% Greek barley and the bottle has retained a lot of similarities with the original one from the 1960s.

Piraiki: from the port with love

Piraiki beer is brewed at Piraeus (its name literally means "from Piraeus") and it is quite popular in Athens. It comes in two varieties - Pils and Pale Ale. Love of natural products and the traditional method of brewing have led to the production of the first pure Greek traditional organic beer. This beer comes in a limited quantity with no preservatives. It ferments and matures for six weeks, regardless of the season. The Pils has a rich foam, a slightly bitter taste and light aroma, while the Pale Ale is dark, fruity, sweet and aromatic, with a spicy flavour.

The famous beer returned on the market a few years ago with the same name and classic recipe. It was first brewed in 1864 and Greeks have started loving beer thanks to it. The beer came back on the market in 2010, equally delicious and cooling and bottled in a similar way.

Mythos: The secret ace in Greece’s sleeve

This is an authentic Greek lager with a rich foam, bright golden colour and refreshing taste produced from selected varieties of barley and hops. It was first brewed in 1997. During the first year of its launch, it made a very good impression and has won many prestigious awards over the years. The recipe is the result of the specialization of "Mythos" brewery’s Greek master brewer, as well as of partnerships with leading European beer schools. Because of its quality, it has become one of the top three brands on the Greek beer market.

Vergina: the heavy weapon of Northern Greece

The first Greek brewery in the Rodopi region was founded in 1998. According to the legend, in antiquity, the first Greek beer was brewed there. Macedonian-Thrace Brewery is located in the industrial area of Komotini, which was selected because it is very well organized and the water is of excellent quality. “Vergina” is a premium lager with rich flavour, while Vergina Red has an amber colour and exotic fruit aroma. Macedonian-Thrace Brewery also brews Edelsteiner, belonging to the category of Premium Pilsner, with a pleasant mild taste. The brewery has also recently started brewing Vergina Weiss, which is a wheat beer with a rich clove and banana aroma.

Zeos: Argos strikes back...

This beer comes from Argos. With its distinctive blue-white bottle, Zeos comes in the following varieties: Black Weiss, Pilsner and Lager. Zeos strictly follows German production standards with no preservatives. The Pilsner is full bodied, with a light flowery and fruit aroma and a strong aftertaste. The Lager is produced according to a Macedonian recipe and has a lovely soft body, a slightly sweet taste and is very refreshing. The Black Weiss is slightly bitter and has a caramel, chocolate and roasted coffee aroma.

Neda: the River of Messinia in your glass....

Originating from Messinia, Neda beer is authentic lager with a classic taste and rich hops aroma. It is slightly spicy with a golden colour. It has been brewed since 2009 and besides Messinia residents the entire Greek community loves it. It is named after the Neda River. According to mythology, Neda is the goddess of water.

Septem: flavour from the mountains of Evia

This bitter beer is fresh and cool. It is brewed on the island of Evia. Its elegant bottle makes a nice first impression. The beer comes in three varieties: Septem Monday's Pilsner, with a copper colour, creamy compact foam, intense flower, citrus and hops aroma, and a slightly sweet taste with a distinctive presence of malt, fresh acidity and strong aftertaste. Septem Friday's Pale Ale also has a copper colour with orange hues, creamy foam, aromas of flowers, exotic fruit and nut, as well as a slightly sweet taste and aftertaste aroma of citrus and marmalade. Septem Sunday's Honey Golden Ale is brewed with honey.

Harma: feast for the eyes and mouth from Crete...

Harma beer (meaning “delight”) is brewed in Chania by a Cretan brewery. This is unfiltered lager, made of pure products with high nutritional value. Harma beer is brewed without mechanical, thermal or chemical treatment, with no additives, preservatives and stabilizers and is currently only available in barrels on demand.

Magnus Magister: with the magic of the Knights of Rhodes

Coming from the island of Rhodes, Magnus Magister beer has become famous not only on Greek territory but also abroad. It is a high-quality Premium Lager which is produced according to a traditional brewing method, without the use of preservatives or other additives. The name means "Great Magister" and refers to the historic period of the Knights of Rhodes and declares the highest rank of hierarchy, the highest of all.

Corfu Brewery: the pearl of the Ionian Sea

Corfu Brewery produces four different types of high-quality fresh beers. Royal Ionian is a fresh Blonde Beer brewed according to an old Czech recipe. It is aromatic and has an intense taste. Real Ale Bitter Brown has a pleasant bitterness and rich aroma. Real Ale Special is a blonde/reddish beer with a fruity aroma and velvety taste. Ionian Epos is the barley beer from the time of Homer, but produced 2,800 years later. According to Homer in his epic "Odyssey" Alkinoos, King of the Phaeacians, kept barley wine in silver and gold craters. Inspired by this, the brewery on the island of Corfu has created its own barley wine on the island of the Phaeacians.
