The carnivals have turned into parties with masks in Nadia’s Cafe

For about a week now I started something new – we organize auditions for the creation of a theater group. They will rehearse here and they will perform here – small comedy etudes. The topic is very well developed in other European countries as well. It won’t be exactly stand by comedy, because I want to adapt to show to the room. It will be nice atmosphere and you could have a laugh. This is the goal of the director.

We intend to have dancing lessons in latino dances, Argentinean tango, rumba, cha cha etc. Now we are organizing a fancy ball on Saturday because of the carnivals. I have other ideas which I would like to put in practice in my art-café.

Which are your qualities that help you best to manage with all the work?

I am very communicative person, my clients always turn to me with warm feelings. However I am very sensitive… this helps me paint, however it stands in my way when it comes to business – I have to be more strict. With the staff I could never become the “boss”. In the beginning of the day I will kiss with all the girls we would tell how our day went by, however this wasn’t helping me. Before I had two girls working for me, now it is just one. People have told me I have to be strict and keep a distance. It wasn’t easy for me as I was an employee once and now I passed on the other side. Before I could not imagine that I have to follow and be careful about the cash register and of course I had some problems from the part of the staff, however little by little I got on the right track.

Generally speaking as a temper I cannot change, however… before I was suffering everything so dramatically and my little sister Maria, who came in Greece first was telling me Come here and I will make you firm!”, however I remained the same.

Do you think you have changed here in Greece?

I learned how to protect myself, talking on a normal tone of voice, without shouting. I learned how to protect my rights about things which you know cost you a lot of efforts. For example here in this neighborhood it is defiantly untended. This park in front of the café is one of the first things I liked an I thought I could fix it and plant some flowers. Besides me no one else cares to clean, it is untended, in the garden on the other side of the street there is a beggar who has build a house there and lights fires… not a nice picture, but it is the reality. Every one or two months somebody might pass by and clean the park. And that is how I fight. With the neighborhood, with the neighbors – there are people who water their flowers and water us as well. No respect and if we haven’t put down the tent they water our tables.

Do you think that the habits of the Greeks have changed recently?

Definitely. They have become more closed, they prefer to stay at home and look through the TV channels. Especially for a family if they go out and drink two coffees and order a juice for the child they will have to pay 15 euro. But we will see… I am an optimist. I have my own ups and downs, however I will fight as I don’t want to loose this idea.
