The Greek police arrested for the sixth time fashion designer Lakis Gavalas for outstanding debts to the state. The new case in connection with which the extravagant businessman had appeared of his own free will before the authorities after they had issued a warrant for his arrest regards debts amounting to 712,000 euro. Of them 120,000 euro are due for VAT, 348,000 euro for income tax, about 15,000 euro for the tax on the building that houses his company and smaller amounts for other taxes.

The three-member panel of the fast-track court has approved the request of the designer to testify on Friday. Lakis Gavalas had spent almost 15 months in custody for outstanding debts to the state. In addition, the court of appeals for felony has already issued a suspended sentence of seven years of imprisonment against him and the court for punishable offences a sentence of five years of imprisonment.

According to his lawyer, the businessman has filed a complaint in the Administrative Court, refuting the total amount due which, according to the authorities, is over 17 million euro. Meanwhile, Lakis Gavalas has offered to donate to the state the property that houses his company in order for his obligations to be forgiven. Experts state that the value of the plot and the building on it is 33.7 million euro.

Sources indicate that there is a buyer for the property but the legal framework in Greece does not provide for cases like this. Moreover, the service fighting legalization of illegal income has levied distraint upon Gavalas’ properties.

A day earlier, the viewers of the morning show on Mega TV had been surprised by the fact that the host of the show was missing from the screen. The reason was that Petros Kostopoulous had been arrested for unpaid taxes and social contributions to the amount of 400,000 euro.

The former owner of the bankrupt publishing house ΙΜΑΚΟ appeared of his own free will in the police station of Attica where he was apprehended. Late last night he was released and the case against him has been postponed for 10 December.
