The concept of human design

Over 6 years ago, it must have been at the end of 2008, I came across a concept called human design. I suppose anyone can guess at the meaning of the phrase, but I’ll clarify it, just in case. It has to do with the structure or architecture of human beings. The term human matrix is also appropriate. Generally, I am a sworn sceptic when it comes to anything related to self-help programmes, whether they purport to make us richer, more successful or help us achieve anything we set our minds to. Which is why I initially regarded the human design concept with a pinch of salt, as bait for the naive. A mere couple of months later, however, I encountered this concept again. This time my curiousity was piqued and I decided to research the subject more thoroughly. I won’t delve into the origins of human design. I will only say that it was first introduced to the public 28 years ago, in 1986, by the Canadian Robert Alan Krakower, under the pseudonym Ra Uru Hu.

The purpose of this article is not to rewrite what has already been explained in hundreds of other writings elsewhere. My aim is instead to put forward my personal views, conclusions and opinions on the topic. The sources on human design claim that the design or matrix of any human being is built on the date, time and place of their birth. So far it seems like yet another type of personalised horoscope, only using a different methodology and presentation. The only thing it has in common with traditional horoscopes is the circle of star signs and planets. As the technical side of human design is, in essence, astrological, it was fairly easy to grasp the way everything within this specific horoscope, called rave chart, is calculated and constructed. I found the Bulgarian translation of rave chart both surprising and thought-provoking. I must admit that only after a few months of active study and research I found myself utterly fascinated with the information we can draw from it, in addition to the standard astrological horoscope.

Naturally, astrology and its predictive aspects, in particular, remain my absolute and indispensable favourites. But human design offered me something I’ve always felt astrology lacked, not because it is somehow imperfect, but simply because the missing element has so far been hidden, inaccessible, not sufficiently interpreted or explained to the public.
Human design is the science of difference - the difference between individuals. Its concept holds that every human being on planet Earth operates and functions differently, in the physical, mental, psychological, intellectual and emotional sense of the word. Not one person can be entirely like another, not even twins. The concept covers another significant element which has been scarcely discussed so far – namely the way people are defined by one another, by the universally accepted binary concepts of right and wrong, of normal and abnormal, and by the way people’s personalities are moulded by a common model for development. Have you ever thought about the way ever since we are born we are being inculcated with the principles of self-improvement and becoming independent individuals, while at the same time we are being restricted by numerous rules.

Individuality and a unified group or national social identity are two entirely incompatible concepts. If I am a person whose earthly mission is to be a proponent of revolutionary ideas which undermine traditional values and the status quo, to be an innovator, to set new paths where no one has dared to set foot before, to encourage people to think outside the box and outdo themselves, then how could my individuality ever fit into the established concepts of ethics and harmonious communication with the outside world, if I cannot help but provoke people’s perturbation, irritation and shock? That would be quite a challenge indeed. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
What do astrology and human design have in common? What are the main differences between their concepts and methodology? Astrology deals with the following notions: 12 star signs, 12 houses, 2 main celestial bodies – the Sun and the Moon, plus 8 planets, 2 Moon (lunar) nodes, 2 main axes – the Ascendant axis and the Midheaven, as well as numerous astrological aspects. The concept of human design is defined by a different set of parameters, along with 2 main conundrums, on which I will dwell in more detail below.
Two horoscopes are calculated – a birth horoscope and a second one which is drawn up after taking into account the measurement of precisely 88°00’00” degrees from a person’s Sun in the birth chart in the opposite direction of that of the star signs. The second horoscope concentrates on a specific moment preceding a person’s birth. It is also drawn up through the day, time and place of birth. Finally, two horoscopes are combined into one, resulting in the rave chart. In other words, so far this is pure and unadulterated astrology.
Naturally, I was intrigued by the mention of these 88 degrees. This is the first conundrum whose resolution I immediately started to pursue. Why precisely 88? Couldn’t it have been 98 or 78, for that matter? Everywhere I looked I came across the same answer – the number of degrees had to do with approximately 3 months before our birth, or 90 days during which the soul “enters” the body, so to speak. In addition, it is claimed that it is only at an 88 degree declination that a continuous movement and continuity of the entire human structure is ensured, there are no static positions. I must admit that I found this answer highly unsatisfactory.
However, as the Latin proverb says. “he who seeks finds”, and in the end I managed to find the answer to the 88 degree conundrum, it turned out to be quite simple. There is nothing mystical about it. For the time being though, I prefer to keep it to myself.
2. The circle of the Zodiac is divided into 64, instead of 12, segments called houses. The 12 star signs are included in it, but the essential thing is not the position of the planets within the star signs, but within any of the 64 segment instead. They correspond to the 64 respective hexagrams of the great Chinese Book of Changes, I Ching, which was intended and used for predictions. There is no mystery about it, surely. It is widely known why the number of the hexagrams is 64 and how they were compiled. Besides, there are 64 codons in the human DNA. To sum up, there are 12 star signs and 12 houses in astrology, while in human design there are also 12 star signs but 64 houses, or sectors/gates.
 3. There are also 9 centers corresponding to the individual's energy centres called chakras.
Hexagrams are distributed depending on these energy centers. That's the biggest mystery so far in human design as well as in terms of arrangement of hexagrams in the zodiacal circle. I'm trying to figure out "the scheme," but six years later that still fails me. However, I will not stop looking for answers, on the contrary – it motivates me and I am sure that sooner or later I will find what I'm looking for.
4. Finally, I need to mention the planets of the Solar system as well as the so-called Lunar nodes. Both in astrology, and in human design, they are the basis for the charts that are arranged and then analysed. What is specific here is that when we talk about the position of the Sun or any other planet in your personal chart, you need to know the exact degree of its location. We do not talk about the Sun in Aries or Taurus, but about the Sun in the 21st, 13th or 15th hexagram.
Therefore, astrology and human design are inextricably linked. Of course, astrology remains the source, the founder, so to speak - without its technical and mathematical apparatus, nothing can be built based on the signs of the Zodiac and the planets of the Solar system. I have seen somewhere a little exaggerated statements such as astrology has to be archived, it is in the past now and such like. Well, you cannot dismiss astrology. Without it, human design cannot exist. The chart used is in fact  one's  personal horoscope after all.
Pros and Cons of the Human Design Concept
Surely, everyone who practices and teaches classes in human design, will only talk about the pros. I do not mind, of course, even I myself do it. But to be able to provide arguments for the pros, you need to know what the cons are too. You need to be familiar with “the gaps” you could be faced with if someone curious asks a question that looks simple at first glance. Practically speaking, the cons of an astrologer and a human design practitioner are mainly due to their ignorance of the astronomical reality.
Here is what I mean:
1. When the precise time of birth is uncertain, astrologers sooner or later come to this stage, they begin to study methods to adjust the time of birth. But the courses, lectures and schools teaching human design skip astrology as a compulsory subject. Neither is required from students to have the necessary astrological competence. I do not know and have no logical explanation why they  have dismissed it from the curriculum though. Probably, the reason is that in order to master the whole astrological system, and on top of that to be able to use it practically, takes many years, and this turns into a huge barrier. And if the practitioner (a non-astrologer) of human design is faced with imprecise time of birth, the only thing he/she can do is to send you to an astrologer.
2.  Imagine that at some point you have no access to a computer program to calculate the rave chart required for a human design analysis. If the practitioner doesn't have the skills to work with ephemeris and does not know how to calculate the astrological horoscope, he/she has no choice – they will need to turn to an astrologer.
3. Human design analyses are mostly basic. The estimates made have nothing to do with the predictions made by astrologers. You can define the time in which an important "fill" is formed out of a slow planet transit, but you cannot get a simple explanation of how and in what way you will experience it.
Questions of the type below cannot be answered:
When or if I will find a job.
When or if I will get married?
When or if I will have children?
And we should be honest to ourselves - these are issues which are almost always the most important reason why people turn to esoteric knowledge and predictions as a whole.
4. When analysing partner relations, what is considered is only the base, the foundation. Human design cannot trace evolution in time without an astrological apparatus and it cannot answer whether certain relationships will last in the future. The key parameter for such a response is the time when the people analysed have met, which again requires astrological predictive methodologies.
Now, let's discuss the human design pros.
I wouldn't like you to be left with the wrong impression. In the beginning, I mentioned that I was deeply impressed by the information that can be extracted from people, very easily and quickly, at first glance. Not that this can't be done by means of astrological methods, but there can be some missing pieces now and then, which leads to certain ambiguity or even uncertainty.

So, what are the pros of human design?
1. It provides information accurately, quickly and directly about the general type of individuals, about the way a person fits into the whole society, where the person is stable and where change is constantly experienced. Literally in seconds, at a glance, you can see the work each of us is entitled to on planet Earth. Human design provides knowledge of diversity and individuality. It is focused on your personal qualities and on what you should develop.
2. The second and practically major advantage of human design is that it provides clear information about the ways in which one can live in accordance with their inner nature, to have the healthiest and most balanced lifestyle. The focus of human design is on the direction each of us should take in order to understand how to make the right decisions that will help us live properly and therefore survive. In the world as a whole, only 9-10% of people are able and will be able to survive on their own, unaided.
Almost 90% of all the knowledge in this direction and main part of the analysis relies precisely on this: on the mental, intellectual, emotional and physical balance. What is mainly affected is the way the individual needs to disassociate from the common models, to realise and experience his/her diversity.
In the transition to the New age of Aquarius, a new type of society has begun to emerge in which the current system of mutual assistance and support will crumble, laws will be of no use, and the individual will take precedence over the collective.
That is why human design is called "science of differentiation, of difference, of  unconditioned living from the world."And the motto is: Learn to make the right decisions, to follow your personal authority and to be able to live in balance and harmony.
Because of the information above, I would recommend that your personal horoscope is analysed by means of the human design methodology.
3. It gives you a great insight into the way your energy centers or chakras function. You will learn about the way you can “turn them on”, whether they are active or not all the time, i.e. to what extent you are dependent on the people around you.
4.  An analysis of peer relationships can provide incredibly useful information of how people perceive what they see in one another, what attracts them to each other, what their relations are and how to easily maintain the balance in them.
The meaning and benefit of human design
I have already dwelt, indirectly, on what the meaning and usefulness of human design analysis is. But I will add a few more words in conclusion of today's article.
For me as a normal person, human design opened a new dimension that allowed me to  get a very different perspective - on myself, on the people and the world around me, on the opportunities provided to me.  Last but not least, I have been given knowledge of where and what makes my life most stable or most variable.
I have been given a reason to think and figure out how to fit in the world, how to find my way among others, to communicate with them without losing my personal balance - mentally, emotionally, intellectually, healthily and physically.
The main motto of human design is that it doesn't matter what happens in your life in terms of events, it is important to participate properly and correctly in it.
Only this will provide you with that personal harmony you need with yourself and the rest of the world. It's not that this is not a basic postulate in astrology, but it is somehow intentionally modified.
What I can say as an astrologer is that human design makes a wonderful addition to a basic analysis of the personal horoscope. Where there is ambiguity, it removes it accurately and quickly. It was worth it to take time and start to integrate that knowledge and methodology as a separate branch of astrological analysis.
