During this legal battle, certain publishers had declared their support for the insurance company and turned against Raptopoulos. The main player was “Proto Thema” newspaper whose continued publications connected the businessman with former Finance Minister George Papakonstantinos. For this purpose, the newspaper relied on half-truths, rumours and the known Raptopoulos’ connection with journalist Makis Triandafilopoulos. The newspaper accused Raptopoulos of owing 8 million euro and of not having paid insurance for 20 years. The amount varied depending on the case.
