The famous Athenian lawyer and president of the football team Panahaiki from Patras Alexis Kougias submitted to the court and the media evidence for match-fixing in the Greek football championship and for the appointment of specific referees.
He accused the president of the football club Olympiakos Volos Ahileas Beos for attempting to bribe the referee Daloukas and attempting to contact the referee of the Maccabi- Olympiacos match.
Several hours earlier the lawyer testified before the Athens district prosecutor Eleni Raykou on the contents of two disks, which he allegedly received two weeks ago in his office, but also on his experience in Greek football.
According to Alexis Kougias, both disks have a record of the voice of Ahileas Beos who addresses unknown interlocutor, whose name was not mentioned, because as he said, he was still unsure of his identity.
"I have been speaking two and a half years and nobody was listening to me. It is about a terrific ring that determines which referees will take part in the professional league and which teams will move to the second and first group. I have filed complaints against Iliupoli until now because for these matches were appointed referees who defeated us in a very provocative manner. From the beginning of this year Athenian referees "do not play with us." Five minutes before entering the press room I was informed that a referee from Athens will take part in our match for the first time this year. It was a message. Something should be done unless there is neither Professional Football Federation nor General Secretariat for Sport or government in the country."
Then the president of Panahaiki attacked the president of Olympiakos Volos. "Ahileas Beos and his unknown accomplices may appoint whoever referee they want for the Super League. It seems that he tried to bribe the referee Daloukas and that he tried to contact him before the Maccabi-Olympiacos match in Italy. According to Beos, the president of Olympiakos Vangelis Marinakis contacted Daloukas and offered him 200,000 euros. He did not do it, but gave his word of honour that he would try to get in touch with him. After the match Maccabi-Olympiacos Ahileas Beos met with Daloukas and tells what he said, using obscene language. The next part of the record makes it clear what happened before. Beos told Daloukas that he was able to arrange him to be the referee and forced him to promise that he would rate the match Aris-Panathinaikos 52-48 per cent.
Previously Beos had warned Daloukas in the presence of his wife that unless if he failed to keep his promise Russians, Bulgarians and Romanians would come to threaten him. The betting ring which is out of any control is mentioned in the last part of the disc and because people have lost their money Beos does not know how to react. I hope that measures for Greek football will be taken from now on. We don’t need such 'figures’ but also some officials in the Professional Football Federation, aiming to fix the matches, even in the regional championships. I testified on all these issues."
The well-known attorney specialized in matters of criminal law talked about the former president of Panathinaikos Nikolaos Pateras, and shared his personal doubts that he had sent the tapes in his office.
"I do not serve anyone's interests. I had not seen Mr. Pateras 10 years. I am a proud man who has achieved everything alone and I lost a lot of money. But I was fortunate to take the protection of referee Daluokas, because otherwise these tapes would not reach me. As soon as I got them I thought they were sent by Nikolaos Pateras. I thought he had chosen me to present them in public. When I received the tapes I called him and he was surprised, and his reaction was genuine. I suggested we should listen to them together because I could not bear this heavy burden alone. We heard them and I invited him as the former president of the Super League and Panathinaikos to take part in a press conference. His behavior in the next days disappointed me deeply because he did absolutely nothing. I went to the president of the Professional Football Federation Pilavios, but there nothing happened either. It is too bad for the Greek football that these disclosures are made by the president of Panahaiki and not by the president of the Federation or the former president of the Super League and Panathinaikos."
Alexis Kougias appealed to the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou to "take the matters into his own hands, because among other things, his family originates from the Achaia area."
"I make this appeal because there will not be another suitable time. Football is the last popular movement and it has been in the hands of criminals for many years. These people sell protection ever since 1996. The criminal, who does not work, just thinks of himself, and ensures the absence of punishment is considered successful in Greece. They sell protection to those who make use of them, then enmesh and blackmail them. I think this is what has happened to Mr. Marinakis. I want to believe that Mr. Pilavios will not have the same fate. In the next five minutes the general commission for referees on which Beos and company rely should not exist. I gave my testimony and the recordings. I played my role and will not say anything else. Today people have learned everything. Only those who don’t want to understand did not understand. Today Mr. Daloukas appeared after a long time. He had made a request to the police to protect him. Now you understand what Ahileas Beos meant."
The lawyer stated his belief that the voice which is heard on both records belongs to Ahileas Beos. However, he didn’t announce the name of his interlocutor, because he is not yet sure of his identity and to keep the seriousness of the case.
"The tape could not be heard now, but a document is a document and as such it was given to the court. If Mr. Beos files a complaint against me I will have the right to submit the tape to the court and it would be heard there. Your hair will stand on end when you hear what Mr. Beos is saying," said the famous lawyer in conclusion.
