Four candidates in total will compete for the post of chairman of New Democracy. The deadline for the nominations expired at 6:00 pm today and it is already clear that four members of the right-wing party will fight for the leadership position.

They are former chairman Evangelos Meimarakis, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Adonis Georgiadis.

Evangelos Meimarakis has been the leader of New Democracy since July 2015. He was chairman of parliament from 2012 to 2015 and Minister of Defence in the government of Kostas Karamanlis from 2006 to 2009.

Yesterday Evangelos Meimarakis gave a press conference to present his vision for the future of New Democracy.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas submitted their applications at noon today.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis was Minister of Administrative Reform and e-Governance in the government of Antonis Samaras from 2013 until January 2015. He is the son of honorary chairman of New Democracy Konstantinos Mitsotakis and brother of Dora Bakoyannis, Greece’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been a New Democracy MP since 2004 and participated in various commissions, including those of finance, defence, foreign affairs, etc.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas is the youngest candidate for the post of chairman of New Democracy (born in 1978). He graduated in political science and international relations in Washington and then began his political career in New Democracy, occupying various administrative posts.

In 2013, he was elected governor of Central Macedonia.

Adonis Georgiadis was the last to submit his application, shortly before the deadline today. He managed to collect the 50 signatures of members of New Democracy required to run for the leadership post almost at the last moment.

Georgiadis has been parliamentary spokesman of New Democracy since February 2015. He was Minister of Health in the government of Antonis Samaras from 2013 to 2014 and Deputy Minister of Development, Competitiveness and Shipping from 2011 to 2012.

The elections of a new chairman of New Democracy will probably take place in November.
