Getting your home ready for the summer

Summer is approaching and just as you take out your summer clothes and get ready for the sun, you should prepare your home in order to live more comfortably in it and make it look like an oasis in the summer, despite the high temperatures.

Just follow these pieces of advice and you will enjoy the coolness of your home even if it is blisteringly hot outside.

1. You have seen all those gaps along window and door frames in winter. Fill them in with silicone or adhesive tape in order to keep the desired temperature inside and to prevent the heat from entering your place.

2. Direct the fan to the ceiling so as to have it work anti-clockwise and let it cool you naturally instead of choosing the more expensive option, an air-conditioner. The cool freshness provided by a fan is friendlier to your health than the low temperatures kept by means of an air-conditioner.

3. If you still have no curtains on your windows, summer might be a good time to buy some as they will protect your home from the hot sun. Keep the curtains drawn while the sun is out and bear in mind that rooms with a view to the west get hotter in the afternoon.

4. Check the insulation of the PVC to make sure that the effort you take to keep your home cool will not be spoilt by the hot summer air coming from the outside. You should check well in advance all doors and windows, so as to have sufficient time to have them repaired if there are any gaps or cracks.

5. Make sure you clean and replace the filters of the air-conditioner regularly, since dirty filters block the normal flow of air. In addition, if someone in your family is allergic, you will need to replace the filters more frequently to protect your family from allergens.

6. Whenever you take a shower, you turn on the bathroom fan and as a result the moisture and steam go out into the hall and the rest of the rooms when you open the bathroom door. Make sure the ventilation is in good working condition to keep the air inside cool and dry.

7. Use energy-saving rather than halogen light bulbs. You will not only save on your electricity bills, but you will also have less heat produced inside your home.

8. You should consider planting a tree or fixing shades over the outside unit of the air-conditioner. Air-conditioners are more efficient when they function at normal temperatures, not exposed directly to the hot sun.
