The opponents of the exploitation of the gold mines recognize that half of the residents support the investment. "We have nothing against the people who work there. They are not just our villagers, they are our relatives. We try to avoid contacts with each other because there is tension and verbal disputes," said Mary Christianou.

"We will not step back. We will stand our ground to the end," she said firmly. Yesterday, the protesters erected barricades and blocked the roads to the villages of Gomati and Stratoni.

"Ultimately, what bothers them is not whether the mines will start working. The problem is much deeper. They fear that this movement can grow and spread because everyone can find something in it. And that scares the government."

From tomorrow until Sunday, the opponents of the exploitation of the gold mines will organize a series of protests in Thessaloniki and Ierissos.
