"Samos is not an urbanised type of place. Its two cities have 5,000 inhabitants each. Given this, those 5,000 refugees who are here today, are a huge problem," he said. Angelopoulos added that the prime minister emphasized some of the memorandum commitments might change, such as the VAT one. It is worth renegotiating in view of the refugee problem and its financial impact on the islands. Samos' mayor said that 51% of last year's total number of refugees have passed through the islands only over the last four days. He spoke against the creation of 'hot spots' in remote locations. Providing Syrians with special protection was another measure discussed at the meeting, said Angelopoulos.

Meanwhile, more than 4,000 refugees arrived at the port of Piraeus on three ships. Eleftherios Venizelos brought 2,493 people from Mytilene, Blue Star had 1,731 on board coming from Chios and Mytilene, and Nisos Rhodes shipped 832 migrants from Chios and Samos.
