The loss of the control over his bicycle was the reason for the Greek cyclist Giannis Tamouridis to drop out from the finals of the World championship in track cycling for men and women in Copenhagen. The accident which happened at the turn number 60 ended with a bad fall and a trauma for the athlete (broken right collar bone) and put the end of the Greeks further participation in the fight for a place among the medalists. (The gold medal was awarded to the Austrian Travis Mayer).
After the drop out of Tamouridis he was replaced by his fellow countrymen Neofitos Sakelaridis – Magouras. Magouras qualified at the 13th place.
In the group sprint the national team of Greece – Hristos Voulikakis, Zafiris Voulkakis and Vasilis Repas qualified at the 13th place with a time of 45.730. Second place in the category keyrin took Hristos Voulikakis who couldn’t qualify for the second round of the competition. In the qualification round he took third place on the line. The non satisfactory results of Voulikakis are due to traumas which the cyclist has recently been fighting against and which became the reason why he couldn’t show his true abilities. In the qualification rounds of the same competition Zafiris Voulikakis took 6th place at the seventeenth line and in the keyrin he was third.
Angeliki Kutsonikouli and Elena Klapanara could be proud with a very good performance in the group sprint for women. With a time of 36.008 the Greek athletes improved their time from their first participation in a world championship and took 11th place.
The world championship in track cycling for men and women in Copenhagen will continue until 28.03.2010. Since today Giannis Tamouridis is in hospital in Thessaloniki where he is expected to undergo a surgery. At least for two months the athlete will have to discontinue his sports activity.
