The "Silver Lion" and the prize for best actor went to the Greek film "Miss Violence" during the 70th edition of the Venice Film Festival. The awards were received by director Alexandros Avranas and actor Themis Panou.

The film is about a strange family and its secrets. The authors say the film is a contemporary commentary on the structure and functions of the family. On the eve of her birthday, small Angeliki jumps from the balcony with a smile. While the police and social services are trying to understand the reason for the child’s act, her family insists that it was an accident.

What secret did Angeliki take away with her? Why is her family striving to forget her and continue living without her? The social services are trying to find the answers to these questions when visiting the perfectly ordered house of the family. It seems that nothing is going to betray it but Angeliki’s younger brother has inadvertently showed the evidence that destroyed the bright life of the family, driving its members to face the secrets they have hidden well over the years. They confess one after another but, ultimately, the solution is violence as it preserves the unity of the family and its secrets.

Many critics commented positively on the claustrophobic atmosphere of the film and its perception. Others saw in "Miss Violence" the current situation in Greece at the time of the memorandum and the supervisory Troika.

After the ceremony, Alexandros Avranas said that the film explores the theme of violence in Greece and Europe. "I need to tell about this power and the hard truth, which are the dark side of society. And it has to become better if it wants to progress."

Themis Panou said in turn, "whenever art helps reveal personal or social secrets, this is always in the public interest."

This was the third consecutive and successful participation of a Greek film in Venice. The first major success had been the best actress award obtained by Athina Tsangari in the film "Attenberg" followed by the award for best screenplay for "Alps" by Giorgos Lanthimos.
