Athanasios Yiannopoulos, a former health minister, said regarding the status of the Greek health care system, "I do not want our health care system to resemble that of the 1970s and not that of Greece but the one in Bulgaria at that time." Specialists in the field quickly criticized his comments, especially  Geoffrey Levert, Professor of International Healthcare in the centre of the United Nations, Serbia and former dean of the Public Medical School at the University of Athens. He said that the comparison of Minister Yiannopoulos was not only inappropriate, but highly inaccurate. Firstly, because in the 1970s, the Bulgarian health care system did not experience serious problems, nor was it part of the reforms in the context of an economic crisis. Levert believes that the problem of the Greek system lies in the education of young professionals and the widespread populism among youth organizations of political parties that takes the attention away from real activities.
