A few years ago, places where you could buy souvlaki filled the city. Afterwards, ice cream with yogurt eateries appeared. Now, its the turn of loukoumades, and they have already become the new trend in town.

Aigaion

In the basement of Aigaion Panepistimiou, you can try some of the best loukoumades in the city, sitting at marble tables in an atmosphere reminiscent of the Athens of the 1930s. With a history of over 86 years in loukoumades, Aigaion will sweeten your life. Here you will find classic loukoumades with honey and cinnamon, walnuts, dark chocolate and those who do not like sweets so much can enjoy loukoumades with cheese. Information: 46 Panepistimiou, phone: 210 3814621-2, www.loukoumades-aigaion.gr/shop/products.

Melouk

This place in Halandri which combines loukoumades with cocktails is one year old. Sweet and salty loukoumades, served with whatever you can imagine in more than 60 combinations. Try sweet loukoumades with applesauce, cinnamon and raisins, with bitter chocolate and Chios Mastiha with caramelised nuts and crackers or salted – with "4 cheeses" sauce, feta or yogurt sauce, fresh tomato, oregano and olives or cottage cheese and honey. Information: 5 Kolokotroni, Halandri, phone: 210 6824600, www.melouk.gr/.

Lоukоumades fromChania at Ktistakis

Since 1912, the quaint Ktistakis coffee shop on Sokratous Street has sweetened generations. Small loukoumades filled with syrup, topped with sesame seeds and cinnamon, are best served at room temperature, hot or cold. Their crunchy crust melts in your mouth, releasing the wonderful taste of honey. If you are in the centre of Athens, be sure to try them. Information: Ktistakis, 59 Sokratous Street, Omonia, phone: 2105240891, https://www.facebook.com/Ktistakis.loukoumades.

BouLouKa

With a beautiful mural at its entrance in Panormou, Boulouka welcomes us ... kneading. Loukoumades at BouLouKa are prepared on the spot in front of you, according to an authentic Constantinople recipe that has been kept since 1914, following the philosophy that the dough is a living organism, which "speaks" better in human hands than in any machine. Choose between salty or sweet loukoumades, chocolate or ice cream, and also try the authentic Constantinople rice pudding. Information: 84 Panormou, phone: 210 6990131 https://www.facebook.com/boulouka.panormou.

Neos Krinos

Krinos Bakery has existed in the area of Nea Philadelphia since 1930, when it offered loukoumades in the neighbourhood. Now the place has been renovated and is called Neos Krinos (new Krinos), remaining faithful to tradition, though. The place combines the past and the future, decorated with paintings on the walls, and its loukoumades are still as delightful as they were before. Hot, fluffy and traditional - they can make your day. Information: 108 Dekeliav, Nea Philadelphia, phone: 210 2513220, http://neoskrinos.wix.com/mat13.

Loukumami

Quite modern, this patisserie appeared a few months ago in the centre of Athens on Panepistimiou Street. Here you will find not only classic loukoumades, but also Spanish churros or French beignets. These 3 delicious dishes combine and cause "panic" among lovers of sweets. Choose among the many wonderful flavours and enjoy them without hesitation. Information: 44 Panepistimiou, Athens, phone: 210 3389733, www.facebook.com / loukumami.

Krinos

Lоukоumades on Aiolou Street in the old big store of Krinos are classic favourites. Traditional round loukoumades with a large hole in the middle are prepared on site and served fresh on an authentic metal plate. Do not be surprised if you see a celebrity at the table next to you - Krinos has been gathering celebrities since 1923, when it opened. Competition with traditional Thessaloniki bougatsa will leave you with a difficult choice. Information: 87 Aiolou, phone: 210 3216852.

Loukoumeli

At the heart of Kallithea, in a small restaurant, you will find that pleasure has no limits. Here, loukoumades are prepared by hand and fried on demand and choices for toppings are various: powdered sugar and cinnamon, honey and nuts, ice cream, white chocolate cherry syrup, as well as a mixture of banana and chocolate. Information: 52 Harokopou and Sofokleous, Kallithea, phone: 210-9525100, http://www.loukoumades-loukoumeli.gr/.

Loukoumades Balatsoura

Ever since 1930, the Balatsoura brothers have been offering some of the best loukoumades in Aigaleo. Traditional and unchanged over the years, their loukoumades are unsurpassed. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, you cannot resist them. Information: 237 Iera Odos, Aigaleo, phone: 210 5982806.

Loukoumakos

Loukoumakos in Petralona offers a more modern look to loukoumades. These classic loukoumades with honey and cinnamon are just a start - you can choose from dozens of flavours and toppings: chocolate, banana, white chocolate and Oreo biscuits, with sausage, or yogurt sauce. Information: 88 Dimofontos, Ano Petralona, phone: 213 0154436, http://loukoumakos.blogspot.gr/2012/04/blog-post.html.

Loukoumades Siametis

The southern suburbs boast Siametis – a pastry shop which has existed for three years. Here the choice goes beyond the classic traditional recipe and moves along modern paths. Lоukоumades here are stuffed or topped with pralines with Bavarian cream, biscuits, strawberry jam or ice cream – these are always served fresh and hot.
