The minister of economics, competitiveness and sea lady Luka Katseli did a symbolical act of encouragement towards the customers just before Christmas. She visited the central commercial street Ermou in the heart of Athens as a sign of support and solidarity towards the small merchants and their less wealthy customers. “There is no doubt that the first months of 2010 will be difficult. Currently our economy is in recession and we are observing a great decrease of the turnover of the country, however that is why our government will undertake active measures for reaction. We will apply the Program for public investments for small and large scale projects, we will pay bad debts (toward the private sector), we will hold the low prices and will promote the purchasing power of the population”, promised Luka Katseli just before Christmas.

She visited also the oldest store of the commercial street, which has 150 years of history. In 1860 the entrepreneur Aleksandrakis opens a small clothes shop. Today his 91 year old son manages the family business with success and the name of Aleksandrakis is know in whole Greece. For GRReporter the owner remembers: “We’ve passed through many difficult moments and I am sure that the market will regenerate. I believe that in 2010 the things will start getting better again.”

“In these difficult times we are close to the employees and the employers from the trade in order to support their efforts in this difficult for our country moment. We will do everything in our power to regenerate our economy and stimulate the market so that the next year 2010 will be good for all of us”, promised Luka Katseli. The minister stated that the first signs of improvement will show in the spring of the coming year and urged the consumers to keep their checks and in this way help themselves in a more correct and effective accounting of the market in the next year.
