After a second round debate marathon the members of New Democracy’s Central Election Commission have finally reached a consensus on the date when they will elect a new party leader.

According to sources, the date is 22 November, and if a second round is required, it will be held the following Sunday, 29 November. The meeting of the Commission lasted more than five hours and ended shortly after 10:00 pm last night. The Commission members expressed concern over insufficient time until the elections and negotiated with the representatives of the four candidates for the post of party leader.

Unanimous decision

"The Central Election Commission of New Democracy has unanimously decided to carry out the elections of party leader on Sunday, 22 November, and a possible second round on Sunday, 29 November, as well as to meet again at 3:00 pm on Monday, 12 October," reads the statement of New Democracy press office.

The date for the elections is also predetermined by technical difficulties, as the company that will organize the procedure and develop the required software needs a specific time for these activities.

Concerns were expressed over the cost of the entire election process, which is estimated at about 450,000-600,000 euro, as it is expected that there will be around 1,200-1,300 ballot boxes throughout Greece.

Two proposals were presented regarding the price that voters would have to pay. One suggested that a higher price in the range of 20 euro must be set to repel 'accidental' voters. The other proposal provided for a lower price, in the order of 1-2 euro and for vulnerable groups to be exempt from paying it.

The meeting of the 17-member commission was chaired by Andreas Papamimikos. Evangelos Meimarakis was represented by Theodoros Abadzoglu, Kyriakos Mitsotakis by Thassos Gaitanis, Apostolos Tzitzikostas by MP Anna Michelle Asimakopoulou and Adonis Georgiadis by Stefanos Stamoulis.
