Despite the difficult economic reforms and the social policy, the governing party, New Democracy, retains its lead as shown by two independent polls conducted in Greece by social research agency MRB between 1 and 3 of October and by sociological agency GPO in the period from 5 to 7 October. Both polls show a minimum but strong lead for New Democracy of about half a percent, namely 21.8% according to the first and 21% according to the second. The largest opposition party, SYRIZA, has the approval of 21.2% of respondents according to the first poll and of 20.5% according to the second.
The rumours of a significant decline in the approval of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn are greatly exaggerated. Indeed, the party's image has suffered greatly as one of its members murdered rap singer Pavlos Fyssas and its leader Nikos Michaloliakos is in prison but the neo-Nazis steadily continue to be the third most popular party in Greece.
In the poll conducted by MRB it is approved by 6.9% of respondents and by 7.8% in the poll carried out by GPO. The results of the first poll show that 5.2% of respondents approve PASOK, 5% the Communist Party of Greece, 4.8% Independent Greeks and 3.8% approve the democratic left party, DIMAR. In the poll conducted by GPO, 6% of respondents approve PASOK and the Communist Party of Greece, 4.5% Independent Greeks and 4.2% of respondents approve the democratic left party, DIMAR.
Antonis Samaras is considered as the most suitable for Prime Minister by 36.6% of respondents in the first poll and by 44.4% in the second, followed by Alexis Tsipras but with a significant margin as he is approved by 24.5% of respondents in the first poll and 30.4% of respondents in the second.
In the poll conducted by GPO, when asked whether early elections are the solution to the problems of Greece, 68.4% of respondents answer "no" and only 30.6% "yes". 50.7% believe that the government will complete its mandate whereas 46.2% believe that, nevertheless, there will be early elections.
