The blockade is over!

The National Coordination Body of the Greek farmers decided to cease the protest, which continued for ten days. Earlier during the day, the Thessaloniki district attorney issued an injunction for a court prosecution against the protesting farmers and he described their blockades as “an offence punished through court.” In the injunction, Dimitris Papagiorgiou says that paralyzing transportation takes away the lawful right of citizens to move and of goods to be transferred and this violates a significant part of Greek public life. “The disclosure of the identity of the offenders and sending them to court is the most important job of the police at this moment,” also says attorney Papagiorgiou.

Yesterday the government gave a 48 hour ultimatum to the protersters and threatened them to use the Special Forces who fight against riots. The decision of the farmers came as a result of that. The border stations Kulata-Promahon and Kapitan Petko Voyvoda-Ormenion are periodically letting cars and trucks pass. It is expected that the tractors from the border station Ilinden-Exohi will leave by tomorrow. Earlier today, the farmers freed the Egantia highway but there are still blockades at two points on the Athens-Thessaloniki highway and people need to go through surrounding roads.
