The number of uninsured cars has decreased by 60% since 5 May 2014, when the new law 4261/2014 came into force.

At today’s press conference president of the automotive committee within the Association of Insurance Companies in Greece Dimitrios Zorbas noted that, as a result of the operation of the new law, the number of uninsured cars is now less than 600,000, whereas it was 1.5 million in the past, according to some estimates. "The police carry out 500,000 checks per month and only 14% of the cars do not have insurance," he added.

Dimitrios Zorbas also pointed out that, while the previous law was in effect, 300,000 people went from company to company without paying insurance, taking advantage of escape clauses in the law and causing damage to others. He added that the changes in the leadership of the General Secretariat for Information Systems have caused some delay in data validation and fines that will soon be overcome.

During the press conference it was reported that the volume of compensations has decreased, not because of the reduced number of traffic accidents but because of the reduced traffic due to the crisis and the rising fuel prices.

Finally, the President of the Association of Insurance Companies in Greece Alexandros Sarrigeorgiou said that over the past two years, insurance contributions have decreased by 25% and the trend is towards a further decline. He added that the insurance market and the relevant supervision have fully protected the reliability of the sector. Alexandros Sarrigeorgiou noted in conclusion that complaints received by the General Secretariat for Consumers have significantly decreased, as there is already order in the insurance market.
