The total share of Greek shipping in GDP is constant and stable over time and this fact suggests that in 2013 it could exceed 7% of the total GDP in view of the contraction of Greece’s GDP in recent years.

In addition, Greek ship owners support culture, education, health and social services in Greece through private charity, through the union of Greek ship owners as well as through charitable foundations.
Typical examples of this are the foundations of the Evgenidis, Laskaridis, Lemos, Latsis, Niarchos, Pateras, Tsakos, Onassis families among others.
