Prepare your home for autumn

Autumn is here and your home should take off its "summer clothes" and put on those for autumn. So, what should you do to prepare your home for the coming winter?

A home needs maintenance as, over the years, under the influence of weather conditions and due to the lack of sufficient care on the part of those living in it, it gradually falls into ruins and an annual refreshment will be good for it before it is time for an overhaul.

The maintenance of a house, of course, has a good effect not only on it itself but also on those living in it, by helping them to start the new season in a good mood and with restored energy.

Check gutters, drains and catch basins

Before the first storms start, facing you with a fait accompli, check whether gutters, catch basins and drains are clean and ready to take on water. Check whether they are in good condition and, if necessary, proceed with the required repairs and replacements while the weather is still nice.

Repair damaged plumbing

You may not have paid attention to leaks in plumbing and to dripping taps, but now is the time to fix this problem before it gets too expensive in the tough winter days.

Replace the filters of the air conditioning system

Perform a complete service of air conditioners, as you will probably use this form of heating this year too. Check the condition of the heating of the house to be ready for any potential problems in winter.

Prepare the fireplace

For those of you who are fortunate enough to have a fireplace at home, it is best to prepare it for the coming winter too. Clean the ash and ensure good air circulation through the chimney. If necessary, hire a professional to clean the chimney and the fireplace, so that it is ready to keep you warm during the cold winter nights.

Check windows

Be sure to check windows and doors for any air leakage. Replace the self-adhesive insulation strips, if necessary, and hang heavier curtains on the windows and the balcony doors. The better the windows in your home, the more heat will be retained inside and the more you will save in heating costs.

Store the veranda furniture

Having realized that summer is over and that the weather is no longer suitable for spending your afternoons on the veranda, clean the furniture and cushions and store them in a dry place in order for them to be in good condition and ready for use next year.

Take care of the irrigation system on the veranda

Check on a regular basis if the irrigation system on the veranda is working properly and that your pots are watered enough. With the help of a specialist or a friend, prepare the plants for low temperatures and do what is necessary for them to survive winter before it is too late.
