Greek solidarity and change front the members of which include lawmakers and activists of the radical left coalition urged citizens to come to the central Syntagma Square in Athens and to protest until they overthrow the government of George Papandreou. “Syntagma will become the Athenian Tahrir,” called the left MP Alekos Alavanos during the central news broadcast of a central Greek TV channel. Tahrir Square in Cairo became a symbol of the revolt of Egyptian citizens against the regime of the former President Hosni Mubarak.
Тhe Minister of Citizen Protection Christos Papoutsis on his part called for a civilized protest. Police and special riot forces are on alert. The two biggest Greek unions GSEE and ADEDY organize a protest march from Aleksandras Avenue to Syntagma Square at 11 am. The protest march of the communist trade union PAME starts at the same time but from Omonia Square to Syntagma.
You can read about the strikers and their purposes here. This is our article on the 24-hour general strike that took place in Greece exactly one year ago, on February 22, 2010. It is reprinted because neither the purposes of Greek trade unions, nor the way they try to achieve them have changed for that time.
