Paul Lewis, the famous reporter of the London Guardian talks about the power of social media and the new tools that they give into the hands of journalists. Paul Lewis was named best reporter in the UK in 2010 and in 2009 won the award for investigative journalism for the investigation of the murder of Ian Tomlison. Ian Tomlison, ordinary newspaper man unsuspecting nothing, comes home after work one spring evening and finds himself at the place of heated demonstrations against the G20 summit in London. Cops push him on the ground and beat him with batons, until the man died. The original version of the London police was that Tomlison was beaten by demonstrators and the police tried to help him. For Paul Lewis the situation is very strange and he posts a message in Twitter seeking for witnesses of Tomplison’s death. Dozens of people respond to his call and send him pictures of the last few minutes of the newspaperman’s life. Lewis meets with each of them at the scene and recovers what happened from dozens of points of view and the coincidences are amazing. The Guardian published his investigation, which demonstrates that the official version of the police is not correct. However, the police did not respond. And then came the key moment. A financial dealer from New York sent him a message on Twitter that included a video of the accidentally caught on tape murder of Tomplison, which he shot during his visit in London during the G20. The video appeared on the official website of The Guardian.

And the initial reaction of the police was to take the video off of the website.

TEDx Thessaloniki 2011 also introduced the  "Why not" stories of Rob Thompson, Principle Designer of the Finnish company with global authority Nokia; the writer Lena Divani, who also teaches “History of Diplomacy" at the University of Athens; the National Paralympic Basketball player Panagiotis Christovergis, who at the age of 13 was confined to a wheelchair after a car accident; the classical ballerina from Vienna Gabriela Scheiner, found herself on Lake Prespa in an attempt to unite Greeks, Albanians and Macedonians.

If you like being among a society of capable, knowledgeable, talented and not recognizing limitations people, then just look for the next TEDx closest to you and visit it. And if you have your own "Why not" story and want to share it with many people, then send it to us. GRReporter will publish it.
