Special measures on the Greek roads for the holidays

The traffic police in Greece is in a state of alert, as the number of people travelling for the Christmas holidays out from large cities has peaked.

In order to avoid accidents and facilitate drivers, the authorities have introduced enhanced road safety measures, as follows: increased number of traffic policemen at places with a high concentration of accidents, enhanced measures at the entrances-exits of large cities where there is increased traffic, presence of traffic police at toll stations to facilitate traffic and inform drivers, and inspections by traffic police teams.

A ban on circulation of trucks heavier than 1.5 tons

In order to secure the safe circulation of vehicles and improve traffic, a ban on the circulation of trucks heavier than 1.5 tons will be in force (for the exit lane) today from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, as follows:

  • On the new highway (Nea Ethniki Odos) and on the old (Palea Ethniki Odos) Athens-Corinth highway, from Elefsina toll station to Rio toll station, except for the section from the 145th km to the 205th + 800th km (the junction at Rio ).
  • On the new Athens-Thessaloniki highway, from the fork road to Agios Stefanos (Krioneri) to the road to Bralos, from the fork road to Lamia to the fork road to Rahes, Fthiotida region, and from Larissa (365 + 400 km) to the underpass in the area of Skotina (410 km).
  • On Ethniki Odos highway Thessaloniki-Nea Moudania from the Thermi overpass to the 34th km.
  • On Ethniki Odos highway Shimatari-Halkida from the junction with the new Athens-Thessaloniki highway to the high bridge of Halkida (12 + 300 km).

The ban on circulation does not apply to:

  • Vehicles of emergency road services (private or public), trucks of "Hellenic Post", trucks of press distribution companies, trucks transporting live animals, pasteurised milk, fresh fish, meat and other perishable goods, provided that the  goods mentioned previously constitute at least 10% of their useful load.
  • Water transporting trucks (tanks) when moving in order to extinguish forest fires.
  • Public and private refrigerator trucks transporting fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Trucks transporting products of animal origin, if they have the appropriate permission of the Veterinary Directorate and the necessary commercial documents.
  • Gondola trucks for public use, transporting ready-mixed concrete in the area of the old Athens-Patras highway from Rio toll station to Drepano towards Athens.
  • Trucks of utility companies (the Public Power Corporation, the National Telecommunications Company, gas companies, etc..), travelling to places where there have been network failures that have to be repaired, only if they have a written order issued by the relevant company.
  • Tanks carrying fuel for fire trucks, if this is proved by documentary evidence.
  • Trucks of the voluntary organisation "The Smile of the Child".
  • Trucks transporting equipment for musical and theatrical performances, trucks used for coverage of television and film events as well as trucks carrying oxygen for medical purposes.
  • Emergency trucks with the relevant permission of the local traffic police directorate.
