Step by step in Piraeus

     The Electric Railway Station was built between 1926 and 1929 based on drawings by architect John Alexiou. The most characteristic feature of this majestic building is its huge transparent dome. This is one of the busiest stops as thousands of people use it every day to travel to and from Athens and Kifissia.
    The Municipal Theatre is the landmark of Piraeus, one of the most important theatres in Greece and a real architectural ornament in neoclassical style. The theatre was founded in 1884 and it took ten years to complete building it. Some of the most famous Greek directors have presented their plays on its stage.
    The Hellenic Naval Academy in Piraeus is one of the most elegant buildings in the city; it was completed in 1904 and designed by famous architect of the time Ernst Ziller. Since its establishment to the present day, the Naval Academy has been considered as one of the best military schools in Greece. It is located at the end of Chatzikiriakou Street.
     The churches that can be found in Piraeus are the cathedral Agia Triada built based on Byzantine architectural patterns, the churches Agios Nikolas, Prophet Elias from Castella, Agios Spyridon, Agia Aikaterini, Agios Vasileios, Agio Paraskevi Kallipoleos, Church of Ag.  Konstantinos & Eleni and Agios Pavlos Catholic Church.
    Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium was originally built in 1895 as a cycling velodrome for the Olympic Games in 1896. Its use as a football stadium started in 1920. It is connected with Olympiacos football club that has scored many victories at it. In 2003, however, it was destroyed and a new, modern, football stadium for 32,115 spectators was built in its place. Inside you will find both the Olympiacos Museum and the club’s official shop.
     The covered Peace and Friendship Stadium, which is an integral part of sports traditions in Greece was built in 1891-94 and it hosted all volleyball games during the Olympic Games in 2004. It is located 4 km away from Piraeus port.
     Lovers of history and culture have the chance to visit many museums and galleries: the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, the Hellenic Maritime Museum, the Electric Railway Museum, the Municipal Gallery and the Merchant Shipping History Institute Exhibition, to name just a few.

    Piraeus is the right place for those who enjoy shopping and entertainment. Along Vasileos Georgiou, Grigoriou Labraki and Iroon Politechniou Avenues you will find from clothing, shoes, jewellery, accessories, gift shops through boutiques and shops of famous brands to bakeries, souvenirs and bookshops. You can enjoy ouzo and meze in the Piraeus Peninsula and Mikrolimano, which resembles an islet. You will find creative cuisine in Castella, clubs behind the cost of Kondili and cafes in Pasalimani and Zea Marina.
