Tight friendship links Greece and Russia

During the meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the residence in Novo-Ogarevo near Moscow, Greek president Prokopis Pavlopoulos underlined the decisive role of Russia in overcoming the major challenges facing the whole world today.

"The challenges are not only economic but also have to do with the people and democracy", said the Greek President, adding that "whatever disputes there are between Russia and the European Union, they will be solved as soon as possible based on institutional procedures." Prokopis Pavlopoulos also stressed that his visit to Moscow inaugurates the year dedicated to Greek-Russian relations, "Greece-Russia 2016", and invited Vladimir Putin to visit Greece this year.

The Russian President, in turn, expressed his delight at the visit of the Greek counterpart in Moscow. Vladimir Putin said that 37 events and activities will take place in both countries within the context of Greece-Russia 2016. The Russian President stressed that Greece is a friendly country with which Russia has very strong historical ties.

In response, the Greek President noted that the events dedicated to the year 2016 of Greece and Russia can and should strengthen the ties between the two countries and the relations between the two nations. Finally, Prokopis Pavlopoulos expressed hope that the war in Syria ends, peace prevails and that the population be protected from the terrorist attacks of the Islamic State that commits crimes against humanity.
