10% of beds in intensive care wards are occupied by patients with influenza
At a time when Greece is at the top of the sad ranking of road accidents and when intensive care wards have 150 beds less available, there are beds occupied by patients suffering from influenza. If people belonging to the vulnerable groups of the population were annually vaccinated against influenza the number of cases would have been much smaller.
"About 10% of beds in intensive care wards are occupied by patients with influenza. The situation of intensive care wards is difficult as there are fewer beds there", stresses Professor Apostolos Armaganidis, pulmonologist in an intensive care ward. "We cannot work in deprivation in good times and be surprised that we are unable to respond to the requirements, when necessary. If we cannot increase the number of beds, let us at least restore their previous availability."
