Unemployment reached 27.6% in July 2013

The number of unemployed increased by 126,451 in July compared with the same period last year, thus reaching 1,374,054. At the same time, the number of employed decreased by 3.6% or by 136,714.

The latest data of the Greek Statistical Institute ELSTAT show that the number of employed in the country is 3,610,549 and that of economically inactive people is almost the same, namely 3,375,636. It increased by 21,830 people this July in comparison with July 2012 and by 7,863 people compared to June 2013.

The analysts of ELSTAT state that, over the past three months, stability in the estimated seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been observed.

Over the past year, the unemployment rate in men has increased from 22.1% to 25% and from 28.8% to 31.1% in women. The highest is the number of unemployed aged between 15 and 24 years, the rate being 55.1%. Next on the list are the people aged between 25 and 34 years and the unemployment rate in this age group has reached 36.2%, up from 32% in July 2012.

The lack of jobs has affected the most the people in the areas of Epirus and Western Macedonia, where the unemployment rate has reached 30.5%, followed by Macedonia and Thrace with 29.9%, Attica 27.9%, Thessaly and Central Greece 26.2%, the Peloponnese - Western Greece and the Ionian Islands 24.9%, Crete 24.8% and the Aegean islands with 22%.

In August the number of people registered at local labour offices, searching for jobs, was 861,279. Their number decreased by 0.91% compared with July. The number of people recorded in the register of unemployed for a year or more was 392,727 or 45.60% and 468,552 or 54.40% of those registered within the last year.

The data show that the number of registered unemployed, who are not looking for a job, was 143,266, which is 4.36% less than July 2013. At the same time, the number of registered unemployed who are receiving benefits increased and reached 145,865 in August, which is an increase of 5.59% in comparison with July.

97.98% of them belong to the general category of unemployed who are receiving benefits and only 2.02% or 2,952 people are seasonal workers.
