“Carpe diem” or “seize the day”

A group of young people make us leave our “cages”, go out on the street, talk to each other, and bring colour and fantasy into our lives. To feel free. These enthusiastic graffiti artists are inspired to bring a wealth of colours in the gray daily life in the city. They painted on the walls of high buildings in major Greek cities since 1998.

They built their scaffolding in the picturesque district of Psiri in downtown Athens. In cooperation with the Municipality of Athens and the “Prosopsi” (“Facade”) program of the development company at the City Hall they began the implementation of the pilot program “Public Murals - Transformation of Psiri” in early July. The program, which is expected to be completed within one month, is part of the pilot bioclimatic intervention in an old neighborhood in the city center in order to emphasize its historicity. This is a layout of three buildings in the Psiri neighborhood though large murals and colour transformation of their facades.

The buildings are on 4 Myauli Str., Iroon square and 9 Agatarhu Str. The graffiti artists Woozy, Seym84 and Taxis will paint them respectively. The materials and paints used have thermal insulation properties and sun protective UV filters which will make the buildings energy efficient. According to the coordinator of “Carpe diem”, Mr. Kyriakos Yosifidis, the program is likely to continue after September. Оwners of other buildings are very interested in it and six of them have already expressed their will to be included in the program.

Particularly important and significant for the public interest is the fact that residents and visitors of the district have the opportunity to follow the painting of a mural of such dimensions live, but also to take part in it if they want.
