An increasing number of Greeks are seeking a job abroad because of high unemployment in Greece, as reported in today's issue of the Greek newspaper To Vima. Many Greeks who have lost their jobs over the years or are university graduates who have failed to enter the job market are trying to leave for other European countries, America and even Australia.

Last year a total of 341,334 Greek citizens filled in the Europass CV, which is the way to enter the European job market, the majority of them being in the most productive age (21-35 years).

Greece thus occupies the ninth position in this ranking, which is quite high, as is clear from the comparison between the population of Greece and that of the countries that rank above it, namely Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK.

A piece of research conducted by company for business services ICAP shows that high-ranking employees of Greek companies are also considering the option of seeking a job abroad. Asked whether they would consider moving and working abroad, 47.3% of executives reply "rather yes", but only if the conditions are better (e.g. only in the case of a higher position, better income, and if the country is more attractive). 16.8% reply "definitely yes" and 35.9% reply "no."

At the same time, according to the international research on working abroad, Decoding Global Talent, 55% of Greeks would go to work in another country. The research was conducted in 189 countries by The Boston Consulting Group and the international network of job search sites The Network that involves over 50 such sites.

Research results show that the Greeks would go to work in the UK (18%), Switzerland (13%) and the USA (12%), Germany, France, Sweden, Italy, Canada, Cyprus and Mexico being among the top ten countries in the Greek rating.

Good salary ranks only tenth among the factors that influence the job search of Greeks. The most important of them is the assessment of their performance, security ranks second and that the job is interesting, third.

Career opportunities, good relations with colleagues and superiors, work-life balance, the creative and innovative working environment and the sense of professional security supplement the basic criteria of the Greeks.

"Based on the survey results we can say that Greeks follow the international mobility trend. Surprisingly, however, the rates in Greece are not as high as in other developed European countries. Moreover, the economic crisis has changed the incentives in terms of work. Knowing that we cannot obtain satisfactory payment we focus on other factors that we like in our work," says Eleni Roka, Marketing Manager of the Greek job search site skywalker.gr.
