The service for prevention of economic crimes has a CD with the names of 54,000 people who have suspicious accounts in Switzerland. This was announced by the service's Chief Secretary Stelios Stasinopoulos himself and its head, Nikos Lekas, in response to an inquiry by the Democratic Left. Democratic Left is one of the three parties which supports the government of Antonis Samaras.
The total value of Greek deposits in Swiss banks is 20 billion euro. The service assures that the information has been verified by various sources and is absolutely reliable. At the same time its leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Bank of Greece and the commercial banks which refuse to cooperate in tracking the deposits' leaking.
According to sources from the Ministry of Finance, currently there are major differences and serious obstacles for the signing of an agreement with Switzerland to levy Greek deposits in their banks. There are so many details to be settled that this agreement will probably be signed only in 2014. The Greek government is expecting 6 billion euro from taxes on Greek deposits in Swiss banks.
Stelios Stasinopoulos and Nikos Lekas have stressed that the Service for prevention of economic crimes is currently called upon to deal with a wide variety of tasks - from Swiss accounts, through tax evasion, to smuggling of fuel and cigarettes, and drug trafficking. They have requested an increase in its staff to enable it to deal with the increased responsibilities.
