The number of swine flu victims in Greece is already 25. For one day, five people died, among who is one 40 year old woman, who did not suffer from any other illnesses.
Due to swine flu complications died: 48 year old man, who was suffering from leukemia, 54 year old woman, who had collapsed immune system, 80 year old woman suffering from diabetes and renal failure and a 70 year old woman with pancreatitis. The condition of a 38 year old woman is critical. She does not suffer from any other illnesses and she has been hospitalized in an ER center. A 22 year old overweight man is also in the ER.
For one week the number of dead cases has doubled – during the last seven days the registered deaths are 13. The number of people suffering from pneumonia is also disturbing.
More and more schools are closing around the country. From December 9 all primary and secondary schools in Ioanina will be closed. In Larissa 32% of the schools have closed and the Magnisia municipality had decided to close another 12 schools – mainly kindergartens and primary schools. From today another 19 kindergartens and high schools will close in East Attica. The total closed schools in Athens and Pieria are 220.
Meanwhile Minister of Education Ana Diamandopoulou sent a letter to all schools in the country, with which she informed them of their right to close a school only once. Experts explain that closing schools is a preventative measure. If the disease keeps spreading, then this would mean that the measures were not effective and they should not be undertaken again.
The sudden increase of swine flu deaths, pressured many people to want to get vaccinated against the H1N1 virus. During the first day of the mass vaccination campaign, 28 056 people got vaccinated. 28 663 have called the national hot line, in order to ask where they can get vaccinated. For now there are not serious side effects from the vaccine in Greece. Registered are 110 complaints, most of which are for mild pain and swelling on the shot spot. Others complain about mild flu symptoms, insomnia and drowsiness, one day after the immunization.
