60% price increase for properties around the airport

After the official opening of Elefterios Venizelos airport in 2002, the real estate prices around it have increased with 60%. With the development of modern infrastructure in the region around the airport – the subway, which connects Athens with the airport, the city train line, Attiki Odos highway, the many new stores in the region – the price of real estate has increased tremendously. The modern equipment and the developed commercial activity, provide over 60 000work positions in the region. Right now 300 companies with staff of 15 000 people are working within the construction of the airport alone, in order to serve the passengers from all over the world.

“Elefterios Venizelos airport is a very good example of how successful cooperation between the private and public sectors can be,” said Yannis Parashis, director in chief of the airport, at the results presentation of how the airport influences Greek economy done by Athens University of Economy. For the period 2002-2008 the new airport has brought €450 billion to the Greek state or 75% out of the total profit for those six years. Based on the presented report, the total contribution of the new airport in 2008, has reached 2.14% of the GDP. This is in comparison to the set standard in Europe, where this index varies between 1.4% and 2.5%. the Greek airport Elefterios Venizelos is among the first ones on the old continent.

After the successful development of the Athenian airport, the board of directors are looking into the airport in Iraklio – the biggest city in Crete.
