The victims of the severe flood in Attica will receive 586.94 euro in aid and 1,174-5,869 euro as compensation for the damage to their houses or for the replacement of their damaged appliances in compliance with the decision that government officials have taken at a meeting.
The list of the Fire Service contains recorded damage to 580 houses and 168 cars in 25 municipalities in Attica. Among them are the regions of Agioi Anargiroi - Kamatero, Agia Varvara, Athens, Egaleo, Maroussi, Aspropyrgos, Acharnes, Galatsi, Dionysos, Drapetsona - Keratsini, Elefsina, Ilion, Korydallos, Metamorfosi, Mandra, Megara, Nea Ionia, Nea Philadelphia – Halkidon, Nikea - Agios Ioannis Rentis, Piraeus, Peristeri, Petroupoli, Salamina, Haidari and Halandri.
To obtain a lump sum of 586.94 euro the applicants have to submit the following documents:
- Application by the victim to the relevant municipality
- Certificate issued by the Fire Service and report issued by the competent municipal office to prove that the property was damaged due to the flood
- Request by the municipality to the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Social Care, which describes the total amount calculated for the granting of emergency financial aid.
The criteria for obtaining compensation to the amount of 1,174-5,896 euro are as follows:
- Number of family members
- Extent of damage (first, second or third category damage)
- Living area of the house (less than 50 square metres, 50-80 square metres, more than 80 square metres).
If the property is rented, 25% of the compensation for the repair of the premises will be provided to the tenant with the consent of the owner on the express condition that the money will be spent only for the intended purpose.
The procedure for the granting of compensation is as follows:
- Application by the victim to the relevant municipality
- Consideration of applications by a three-member municipal commission
- Request by the municipality to the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Social Care issued on the basis of the applications and inspections completed, describing the total amount calculated for the granting of compensation.
In addition to the Deputy Minister, the meeting involved the Chief Secretary for Social Affairs, representatives of the Ministry, mayors, deputy mayors and representatives of the municipal social services.
For his part, the Deputy Minister stressed the need to respect all the procedures and conditions for the immediate and full payment of compensation to those who are actually affected by the flood.
The fund for natural disasters will allocate and send the funds to the municipalities as soon as they submit their requests to the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Social Care. It is expected that, by the end of the day, the Ministry of Interior will send a request to the Ministry of Finance for the immediate allocation of an amount of up to 1 million euro to start repairing the damage.
At the same time, the amounts set by the Ministry sparked a particular interest and comments on social networks. "The lump sum aid to the victims is 586.94 euro. Why? Because it is equivalent to 200,000 drachmas. 12 years after the introduction of the euro our useless bureaucracy still thinks in drachmas," is one of the critical comments.
