In an attempt to turn, for the first time, to the international audience and the Greeks abroad through a world tour the State Theatre of Northern Greece is putting on the musical theatre super-production "Alexander the Great. Rock opera", composed by Constantinos Atiridis, who is also its co-director along with Yiannis Vouros, and Alexandra Charanis its libretto author.

The two-hour show will be presented with titles in English at Thessaloniki Royal Theatre from 23-26 October at 09:00 pm. Then, on 29-30 October, there will be two more performances with free admission for disadvantaged people. The following performances will be at the Athens Concert Hall on 27-28 February and 1 May.

Who actually was Alexander the Great?

Surrounded by a ten-member orchestra and a troupe of 30 actors, singers and dancers, Dimitris Tiktopoulos plays the role of the great commander, who when he was only 33, managed to conquer most of the world at the time. The story begins a year before Alexander’s birth, on the island of Samothrace where his mother Olympia and the king of Macedonia, Philip II, first met during the Bacchic Mysteries, and ends with Alexander’s death 33 years later.

However, who was that man who changed history and influenced the culture of millions of people? How many things about his life do we actually know? The opera aims, through contemporary music and sound, to bring us closer to the dynamic personality, dreams and human nature of Alexander the Great.

Promising performance

Artistic Director of the State Theatre of Northern Greece and co-director of the play Yiannis Vouros said, "Last summer I watched a rock opera about the life of Alexander the Great. I was impressed with both the concept and the wonderful music. Perhaps this was the first time that a Greek artist had undertaken such an ambitious task, a performance with outstanding prospects. The reviews in the press were ecstatic. This is how I came up with the idea of creating a new play to be staged by the State Theatre of Northern Greece. There is no doubt that, with the support of such a large institution like the State Theatre, with a new libretto and excellent production, from an aesthetic and technical point of view, we will achieve a promising performance containing all the elements and prerequisites for becoming a global hit."
