Today, 1 December, is the launching date of the programme aimed at making Alonnisos the first Greek island without plastic bags. The programme involves Alonnisos municipality, the Mediterranean SOS Network and Mom, the society for the study and protection of Mediterranean seals.

The programme entitled "Alonnisos without plastic bags" aims to contribute towards the preservation of the coastal and marine environment of the island where the largest remaining population of the Mediterranean Monachus monachus seal species is living, and to promote Alonnisos as a destination for alternative tourism.

The programme provides for the households on the island to receive 2,000 cotton cloth reusable bags and for carrying out student training, experimental seminars for teachers and workshops for various activities involving the local authorities.
