Another 48-hour strike is paralyzing Greece within just one week. The trade union of public sector employees ADEDY is protesting against the government’s plans to cut 12,500 civil servants by the end of September which is one of the conditions that Greece must meet in order for it to receive the next tranche of financial assistance of 1 billion euro. A protest procession has been planned for 10:30 am today and due to it the police will close the underground station at Syntagma Square at that time.
In addition to civil servants, the strike involves workers in public hospitals who will serve only urgent cases today and tomorrow, teachers, court clerks, tax employees and the employees in all departments of the Ministry of Culture. The federation of port workers is participating in the strike too and therefore, the ports will serve only the most urgent cargos.
All public and private media in Greece have announced a three-hour strike from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm today too.
Secondary school teachers, local government employees and the employees in the insurance funds have been on strike since yesterday. The administrative staff in universities yesterday announced a five-day strike as well.
A major procession involving university and school teachers, and employees in the field of education will take place in central Athens at 1:00 pm tomorrow whereas trade union leaderships will meet the same morning to decide on their future actions. The trade unions of public and private sector employees ADEDY and GSEE have announced a large anti-fascist procession which will take place in Syntagma Square at 6:00 pm on Wednesday.
