Deputy head of the British diplomatic mission in Athens Andrew Staunton will visit the island of Zakynthos in the coming days within the context of the already established cooperation with the local institutions to solve the problems caused by British tourists in the summer.
For another year in a row, the main topic of the discussion will be youth tourism and particularly the extreme behaviour of young tourists on the streets and beaches of the island, which is an extremely popular destination for this type of tourism.
The British Embassy launched the "Hangover Holiday" campaign last year. Its aim is to raise awareness among young travellers in order for them to be able to limit the possible troubles during the holidays, such as excessive alcohol consumption, driving under the influence of alcohol and other related situations.
This year's campaign will be presented on Friday 20 June by the honorary British diplomatic office on Zakynthos and Zakynthos municipality. As stated on the website of the British Embassy in Greece, the aim of the campaign is to encourage young British tourists in Greece to behave responsibly, inform them of emergency telephone numbers and warn them of the consequences of their actions.
Last summer, a British tourist lost his life after being stabbed during a quarrel in a group of his countrymen in Malia resort, Crete. The other places where alcohol tourism is flourishing include the following resorts: San Antonio on Ibiza, Laganas on Zakynthos, Kavos on Corfu, Magaluf on Majorca, Agia Napa in Cyprus, Faliraki on Rhodes, Sunny Beach in Bulgaria and Kardamena on Kos.
