A fire broke out in a forest area near the Athens suburb of Agios Stefanos shortly after 11 am today. According to the Greek media, the fire was advancing to the suburb of Stamta and the first residential buildings in it, without threatening the nearby children's camps for the time being.

Strong winds reaching 8 on the Beaufort scale (63-75 km/h) were blowing in the region, helping the blaze to rapidly expand.

The flames were burning a pine forest and the fire extinguishing operation was taking place by land and by air.

The fire department defined the situation as particularly critical because the wind was hampering the work of firefighters. The operation involved 55 firefighters with 19 fire engines, 15-member land squad, 2 aircraft and 2 helicopters.

The nearby municipalities were also helping by supplying water with tanks. There was an order for a continuous support for the firefighters who are on the spot.
