The life of the Greek pirate, patriot and merchant Ioannis Varvakis will be recreated on the big screen by Yannis Smaragdis, director of "El Greco". In the movie "God loves caviar” the main roles are played by international stars, including Sebastian Koch (" Lives of Others "), Catherine Deneuve and John Cleese (Monty Python movies, "A Fish called Wanda").
The movie will begin shooting on October 31. The actors will spend two weeks in Pylos for the shooting of the film, and they will also go to Aegina, Crete, Psara, and also in Russia in St. Petersburg and Astrakhan.
The film tells the story of Varvakis Ioannis, a pirate who became a very rich merchant of caviar, and never stopped fighting for the acquisition of more wealth, power and political influence in order to eventually become a major benefactor.
The story starts from the island of Psara in the northern Aegean Sea and reaches the backyard of Catherine the Great of Russia, stretches along the shores of the Caspian Sea to end in the divided by civil disputes Greece during the Greek national liberation uprising of 1821.
"We are trying to make this film in a very critical moment for our country, but not only, precisely because it can help human souls to be comforted, but also to rise again. We believe that this film will do only good to people, especially to Greeks. It will soothe their souls, but it will also make them proud ", said the director of the film.
The main roles in the film are played by actors from 6 countries: England, France, Russia, Spain, Germany and Greece.
The role of Varvakis is performed by Sebastian Koch, and John Cleese, Catherine Deneuve, Juan Diego Botto (Grand Inquisitor in "El Greco") come in key roles.
Greek actors who will star in the film are: Lakis Lazopoulos, Akis Sakelariou, Marissa Triandafillidou, Alexandra Sakelaropoulou, Yannis Vouros, Alexandros Milonas, George Charalambidis, Michalis Yatropoulos, Fotini Baksevani, Pavlos Kondoyanidis, Dimitris Kalivokas, Tassos Nousias, Manos Tsangarakis (the child who attracted attention in the series "The Island") and many others.
Artistic director of the film is the distinguished stage designer and director Nikos Petropoulos, and costumes will be made by the winner of numerous awards Spanish woman Lala Huete ("Goya" award for the movie "El Greco").
