China’s Ministry of Commerce expressed great concern over the statements on halting the privatisation of Piraeus port. China’s consortium Cosco is the main candidate for the purchase of the majority stake in the port.
"We were informed by press reports that, on 28 January, the new Greek government declared that it would halt the privatisation of Piraeus port. We are highly concerned about this," ministry spokesman Shen Danyang said during a briefing, adding, "We intend to ask the Greek side to protect the rights and legitimate interests of Chinese investors in Greece, including of Cosco."
China’s Ministry of Foreign affairs responded to SYRIZA’s statements too. "In 2008, Cosco consortium signed a concession contract for the two cargo platforms at Piraeus port. This contract is an example of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries and we believe that both governments must adhere to its implementation and expand the cooperation in other areas, in the interest of the peoples of both countries," said spokesman of the diplomatic department Hua Chuning.
Meanwhile, Chinese media compared Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras with Greek mythological hero Phaeton. The unreasonable son of sun god Helios got on his father’s chariot but lost control over it, thus causing a fire disaster on Earth, which created the African deserts.
