This year's Christmas table in Greece is cheaper compared with last year, but the difference is only 2.02%, as shown by the data of the inspection of food prices, carried out in the period 14-16 December by the Institute of Commerce and Services of the National Confederation of Hellenic Commerce.
In 2014 the total value of the products for the Christmas table is 144.76 euro. Last year it was 147.75 euro and in 2012, it amounted to 151.56 euro.
The slight 3-euro reduction is mainly due to the decrease in meat prices by about 2.88% at the central "Varvakios" market in Athens (at the local butcher’s shops meat prices are higher - author’s note) and in the prices of alcoholic and soft drinks by 6.13%.
The greatest 7.14% decrease is reported in the price of lamb, namely to 6.50 euro/kg. Pork is 5.13% cheaper whereas the price of turkey has increased by about 10%.
The decrease in the price of soft drinks is in the range of 6.38% and of wines 14.4%. An exception in this category is beer prices that have increased by 2.52%.
According to the study, another factor that contributes towards the price decrease of the products for the Christmas table, albeit to a lesser extent, is the small decrease in the prices of sweets. Compared with December 2013, the prices of the traditional Christmas kourabiedes and melomakarona are almost 2% lower.
At the same time, there is a 1.56% increase in fruit and vegetables prices. Cabbages and tomatoes are the champions in the ranking with an increase in the range of 34.4% and 16.4% whereas potato and apple prices have decreased by 16.9% and 11.7% respectively.
