Former Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis said that due to the crisis all parliamentary forces were discredited in favour of the extreme right. According to her Golden Dawn as well as some other far-right parties take advantage of misunderstood patriotism and the belief in conspiracies by some Greeks and thus win political dividends. According to her the way in which Golden Dawn may be made harmless is to invite those of their MPs who are not in prison to take part in television debates in order to be unmasked by the representatives of the other parties. "The fact that the media do not invite them idealizes them in the eyes of parts of society. However during discussion it becomes clear that they have no political programme. This is the way to present their true face to the public", she said. Among the reasons for the crisis Bakoyannis also listed the large influx of illegal immigrants as well as the still spreading clientism.
The fact that neither she, nor Simitis as prime minister of Greece from 1996 to 2004, did not utter a single word of self-criticism in relation to the reasons that lead the country into such dire financial straits provoked many negative comments from the audience of the forum.
