A 15.4% decrease was reported in the overall construction activity for the first nine months of 2009, and the decline during September was 12.9%. The data are presented by the National Statistical Institute based on building permissions issued during the corresponding periods. The number of building permissions for public and private enterprises and private persons is 4670, equaling one million square meters or 4 million square meters of built-up space. This means that construction marks a decrease of 24.6% in area and 25.7% in volume compared to the same period of 2008.
Private construction entrepreneurs are the moving power of construction activities in Greece. 4624 are the permissions issued for the private sector, or 95.6% of all construction in the country. According to the Greek National Statistical Institute the state only participates in 4.6% of construction activities with 46 building permissions issued.
In the third trimester of 2009 a serious decline of 9.9% compared to last year’s same period in the sale of automobiles is observed. The same index for June- September 2007/2008 was only 2.8%. According the Institute Greece marks a decline of 5.1% in the third trimester of this year, compared to the second one.
