Deadly explosions at a Cypriot naval base, 12 people died

Military sources confirmed that a meeting on the issue of moving the containers in warehouses under appropriate conditions was held last Wednesday. The information that after the seizure of the explosive materials from a ship traveling from Iran to Syria the responsible office refused to accept the explosives raises serious questions. So, it was decided the containers to be stored at the naval base near Limassol.

Electrification problems in Cyprus continue, because 80% of the installations of the largest power plant on the island were destroyed. Commentators say that if the 50-metre hill was not between the base and the power plan, the plant would have been completely destroyed. Due to problems with electricity, the islanders could remain without running water too.

Similar are the comments on the time of the blast. It is estimated that if the containers had exploded 1 or 2 hours later, the tragedy would have been much more serious as the people on their way to work could become victims of the explosion too.

Over the next hours, a Greek military plane C27 is expected to fly to Cyprus with expert pyrotechnics to investigate the cause of the accident along with their Cypriot colleagues. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed that there are no Greek citizens among the dead and the injured although a unit of the Greek forces in Cyprus is located near the naval base.
