After years of research, the University of Athens is ready to present the bream fish, which is typical of the Mediterranean sea, as a new product with protected quality and beneficial properties.

The "eco-bream" as media call it or the "tasty medicine" has been proven a food wholesome for man. It helps clear the arteries of accumulated cholesterol plaque and helps prevent heart diseases. The research of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Athens points out the newly discovered healthy properties of the bream fish. In Greece, this fish eats mainly the waste from the pressing of olives, which is being discharged into the sea without any control. It, in turn, contains wholesome nutrients that are released in the body of the "eco-bream".

The Department believes that based on the positive qualities of the bream, its healthy effects on the human body and its purifying function in the sea, the bream could become the basis for developing a successful business model.

In Greece, 90% of the production of the fisheries sector goes for export. The sector's turnover reaches 650 million euro annually. The trade in fish and seafood is one of the few businesses in the country that has a positive trade balance and maintains approximately 10,000 permanent jobs.

Three Greek companies are currently developing models to create organic food supplements and foods fortified with the therapeutic ingredients derived from the "eco-bream." According to nutritionists, in the near future these new products may be the basis for a sustainable and healthy diet consistent with the genetic needs of each individual, Imerisia reports.

Until then, however, Greek housewives recommend that if you feel like eating a delicious and healthy fish, you can grill the bream or cook it in a pan with some olive oil, rosemary, oregano and salt. The fish is white and juicy, and pairs well with white wine.
