Economic growth still negative in 2009’s third trimester

Negative economic growth was recorded for the third trimester of 2009 in a period when most EU countries are slowly emerging from the crisis. The National Statistical Institute of Greece has posted data according to which the recession is worsening in the country. This is due to the negative growth index throughout the year: -0.5% of GDP between January and March, -1.2% of GDP between April and June, and in third trimester, July-September, -1.7% of GDP. Compared to the January-September period in 2008, an overall decrease with 1.1% of GDP in the economic development for the same period in 2009 is observed.   

Compared to last year’s data, the greatest fall-downs are observed in the sectors of construction – down with 22.5%, in the machine-building industry- down with 21.3%, transportation- decreased with 19.1%, and a 13.9% decrease in other sectors. Expenses for the current year have increased with close to 1.1% compared to 2008. Goods and services imports for 2009’s third trimester marked a 16.5% decline compared to the same period of 2008. The exports have dropped with 21.7%.

Several economic sectors reveal increase in net profits for the July-September period of 2009: 7.5% in the agriculture, farming and fishing sector, 5.9% in the public services sector, 2.7% in banking and investment sector, together with real estate market and 0.3% in the sector of trade and tourist services, including hotel services, transport and communications. Despite, a great fall-down is observed in energetic and heavy industry- with 9.7%, and in construction- with 17.5%.
